There is some dispute about the best way to get mushrooms clean. Mushrooms are very porous and soak up and hold water easily. They should never be soaked. Also, some are grown commercially in a sterile medium, and the clinging, still growing, medium needs to be removed. A brush is perfect for doing this. I take the extra precaution of wiping them, after brushing, very quickly and briefly with a damp paper towel, then immediately drying them en masse with a dry paper towel. This method works out fine. However, it is said that some of the great culinary masters, such as Alton Brown and Jacques Pepin (one of my favorites), advise that washing mushrooms does not lead to their being mushy or losing flavor. Best to experiment and find out for oneself.
This particular brush is nigh to perfect. The bristles are neither too hard nor too soft and remove the bits of mushroom debris while not damaging or scarring the mushroom. It really does its job. It is attractive with rust colored bristles in a brown casing, which is topped by a faux marble lid. It is small and easily held in the hand. And it rinses out well at the job's end.
The shipping costs, however, are steep. I ordered it anyway because I couldn't find it locally. Considering that I ordered the potato brush as well (equally good by the way, with firmer beige colored bristles just right for potatoes), the two items equalled $11.84. The shipping/handling costs equalled $13.60, for a total cost of $25.44. Since I will be using these for a long time, it is worth it to me because they are top quality products. It was sent FedEx ground standard.
So I am very pleased with my purchase. No complaints at all!
