Hamilton Beach 51101 Personal Blender Review

Hamilton Beach 51101 Personal Blender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other day I impulsivley went and bought a Hamilton Beach Juicer. When I got it home I hemmed and hawed, wondering if I should use it or not. Did I really want it? I started looking around the internet and realized what I really wanted was something to make smoothies or other fruit concoctions. I researched a few things like the Magic Bullet and Ultimate Chopper but both had mixed reviews. I was tempted to buy the Tribest blender because it had some good reviews here at Amazon but I could only find it online and it's listed at $60 - much more than what I really wanted to spend.
Instead, I went to my local Walmart and to see what they had. I saw the Hamilton Beach Personal Blender and it was priced for only $13.67 so I was interested. It's just me, so I don't need a huge and heavy unit taking up what little counter space I have. I also figured since that if I bought it at Walmart and that if I didn't like it I could easily return it.
I brought it home, looked over the manual and attempted my first smoothie. I threw in milk, strawberries, frozen raspberries and hit the button. I needed to blend it some more because of the raspberries being frozen. Live and learn, I should have done those first. I put in some ice and blended it some more. It came out wonderful!
The jar itself can be used as a serving glass. I probably will only use it in that manner at home. It has no handle so I'd be afraid I'd drop it when I was out. Then the blender would be worthless because the blade is in the jar.
* Jar twists and locks into place on the base
* Comes with a travel lid to take your drink on the go
* Cord wraps around the base
* Not intended for all food - manual says not to process hard foods such as cheese, crackers or meat. A maximum of 12 tablespoons can be ground at a time. Do not try to mash potatoes, mix stiff dough, whip egg whites, grind raw meat or extract juice from fruit or veggies.
* Container cover has filler cap that can be removed to insert small objects when blending
* Can not use big chunks of ice. You need to break them down. I have an ice tray where the shape is a small circle (half ball) and it was fine. Perhaps this is what you can use those holiday themed ice trays for. Some of those sizes which I have seem I think would work in this.
* NOT dishwasher safe - but easy clean up - rinse, put water and soap in jar, blend for a minute, empty, rinse again and you're done.
* No complicated speeds or choices - one push button
* I can't find it on the box or in the manual but according to Amazon, the motor has 175 watts of power
I just went and made another smoothie! Banana, Vanilla soy milk, little bit of chocolate syrup and instant coffee. Yummy!
This one site has TONS of recipes that you can use with this blender. You just have to play with the recipes because a lot of them are meant to be multiple servings.
http://fooddownunder.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=smoothie
While this might not do what a full size blender can, this is a great blender for smoothies, drinks, shakes and to grind coffee. I love that it's small, the cord wraps around the base and I can use this thing at night and not wake up the neighbors!
I just came back from the grocery store and picked up some more fruit... what else can I make???

No need to lug out the heavy-duty blender for those morning smoothies, protein shakes, or other blended beverages. When you're trying to get out the door in a hurry, this convenient blender offers one-person portions, simple one-touch blending, and durable stainless-steel blades for fast results. Best of all, its 14-ounce blending jar doubles as a travel cup, so you can sip from the same container you blend in, which means less to clean in the end. The portable travel cup includes measuring marks up the side, and it fits most car cup holders for safe, secure transport. A travel lid to drink from and a recipe book are included. Great for at home or on the go, the 175-watt single-serve blender measures 3-3/4 by 3-3/4 by 12-1/2 inches.

I'm very please with this little blender. Holds quite a bit and was powerful enough to handle hard, frozen fruit. Haven't tried ice yet but I know it will do great. It blends quickly and the dispenser actually works great! It's made of plastic so may crack if handled too rough, but overall I'm extremely pleased. Does exactly what it's supposed to.

We've had our blender for a couple years. Use it occasionally. That's why it was disappointing when it didn't blend one day. Turns out the plastic clutch that engages the blade was broken. (Notice that the clutch is offerred here at Amazon. Is that because it tends to break?) While the part is cheap, we'll probably have to send it back to Cuisinart for the actual repair. Sorry, gang - not good engineering, either to have a flimsy part or to have one that breaks and has to go back to the repair shop when it does.

We grow seeded grapes on our patio and had a massive amount of grapes last summer, so decided to do something with them. We made grape jelly which tastes like Welches grape juice! Couldn't have done it as easily without this tool, which worked wonderfully in the food strainer. Great product.

West Bend 82386 Kettle Krazy Popcorn Popper and Nut Roaster Review

West Bend 82386 Kettle Krazy Popcorn Popper and Nut Roaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I shopped around quite a bit for a popcorn popper. I was tired of microwave stuff, and don't like the results from a hot-air popper.
There are several like this, with a motorized stirring rod and a cooking surface, but either they get poor reviews for reliability (Cuisinart), or were too expensive, difficult to maintain, scratched the Teflon cooking surface, etc.
This model is very similar to the West Bend Stir Crazy, but has two heat settings (nuts or popcorn) and - most importantly - a much thicker stirring rod. With the more basic Stir Crazy, the rod is thin and easily flexed (think coat-hanger) and diverted by the weight of the popcorn itself, causing it to be pressed into the Teflon surface while rotating, thus scratching the Teflon. This model has a MUCH thicker stirring rod (I took a few pictures and added them above to demonstrate) that never makes contact with the surface.
The popper pretty much performs like it's supposed to. I was curious to see if the lid stayed in place while popping a full batch, because is simply sits on top and is only held in place by the weight of the cover. It does in deed stay put.
It doesn't seem to matter what brand of popping corn you use. Name brand or generic seem to perform the same - very well. I have never used the butter well, because I don't like how you wind up with a few soggy bits of corn rather than all of it having a consistent flavor and texture. I've experimented some and found that simply adding several pats of butter to the oil and corn does a great job of giving you a nice mild butter flavor. I thought maybe the butter would burn, but that did not happen. I also reduced the oil by 1/2T Spoon, but don't recommend reducing the oil much more than that, since the distributed hot oil is what promotes the rapid kernel popping. I also added salt directly to the oil and popping corn at the beginning of the process, which worked well enough, but was more difficult to clean in the end. I'm also worried that it might over time scratch the Teflon surface, so I don't plan to do that again.
The bowl is moderate thickness, and appears fairly sturdy. It is not flexible, so I imagine a hard drop might crack it. Because it is a hard clear plastic, it is susceptible to scratching if you use any kind of abrasive to clean it. I'm not sure why you would, considering it only takes a bit of soap and hot water to clean popcorn/oil/butter residue, but whatever.
Finally, it comes with a few recipes in the manual. We've tried a couple and they turned out well. One of them was Scotcheroo Popcorn - which is a sort of gooey sweet treat that includes chocolate and butterscotch chips.
All together we are really, really happy with this popper. I recommend it without hesitation.
UPDATE: UPDADE: I often wonder about these reviews. 99% of the good reviews are written in the first few days of ownership. This tell you nothing of the longevity of the product. So, I am back after a year to tell you that I still love this popper. It still does a great job, and has had absolutely no issues.

Ideal for anyone who loves to curl up with a bowl of popcorn and watch movies, this electric popper quickly pops up to 6-quarts of fresh, hot popcorn in minutes. The versatile appliance can also be used to make up to 3 cups of mall-kiosk-style glazed nuts or roasted nuts to serve to friends on poker night or when watching the big game. Simply turn the control knob from "off" to "popcorn" or "nuts", depending on the task at hand. The unit's motorized stir rod and nonstick temperature-controlled heating plate work together to keep the kernels or nuts in constant motion and evenly heated for thoroughly roasted nuts or perfectly popped popcorn (with very few unpopped kernels). Even more, the machine's see-through lid doubles as a 6-quart (24-cup) popcorn bowl. Simply pop, flip, and serve. Extended stay-cool handles assist with flipping the base and lid when emptying popcorn into the bowl, and the unit's removable heating plate cleans up effortlessly by hand or in the dishwasher. With its sleek, curvy design, the popcorn popper and nut roaster measures approximately 12 by 15 by 9-1/2 inches.

KitchenAid Food Processors Review

KitchenAid Food Processors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this model almost two years ago, as a replacement for a much-loved food processor that had been discontinued. Here's why I don't like this one:
1) One of my main criteria when I was shopping for it was that my new food processor should have a large capacity. This one was advertised as having a large capacity. But the stem in the middle of the bowl is very short, so you can't actually put much food into it, especially if the food is liquidy.
2) They advertise having one of the widest mouthed feed tubes. But what they don't tell you is that the "maximum fill line" on the feed tube is very low. So you really can't pack all *that* much food into the feed tube.
3) The ad said it had an attachment called "juicer." I thought that this meant that I could use it to, say, juice carrots, like the way my local food co-op has a juice bar where you can buy things like carrot-beet-celery juice. But no, actually the "juicer" is an attachment where you push down on an orange over a dome and the juice comes down the sides, through holes, and into the body of the food processor. It's basically like an ordinary "Mexican hat shaped" manual juicer except that you use the food processor to turn the middle (I guess that's how it goes -- I've never used this attachment) and then the bowl collects the juice. When I made my final decision between the last two food processors that I was looking at, I chose this one because it said "juicer." So this was a disappointment and made me feel that I'd been snared by phony ad hype. Interesting... I see they are now saying "citrus press" instead of "juicer" for this attachment. I think that is much more honest.
4) It's not good with small quantities. My old food processor could chop a clove of garlic. My KitchenAid just bounces the clove of garlic around, uncut.
5) Food often will "slalom" between the lower and upper blade without ever getting chopped. I've made hummus, let the machine run for a while, served it, and then found whole garlic cloves in the middle of the hummus, totally uncut. My old food processor never did that.
6) Flimsy spatula.
7) The rim of the lid fits on the *outside* of the bowl. So if you blend anything liquidy, it's pretty much guaranteed to be spread all over the outside of the food processor. And the counter underneath. On my old food processor, the lid fit *inside* the bowl, which was a zillion times better at keeping drips contained, mess-free.
8) When I want to take off the bowl with the blade inside, the blade is always "locked" to the middle stem, which keeps the bowl from coming out unless I reach in and disconnect the blade. This is easy to do, but it's annoying, especially when the blade is covered in food.
9) The pusher that you use to push food through the feed tube has two parts to it. They often unlock from each other while I'm in the middle of using them to push food into the food processor. This seems mildly dangerous.
10) When I bought it, I loved the idea of having multiple bowls, so that I could chop one thing, then switch bowls and chop something else. However, to use a smaller bowl you need to put the smaller bowl inside the larger bowl and then run the food processor with both bowls attached. Unfortunately, the few times I've tried this, food from the smaller bowl has gotten onto the bigger bowl, making it dirty enough that it needed washing too, with no time saved.
The one thing that I *do* especially like about the KitchenAid more than my old food processor is that its base is very well-sealed, so it is easy to wipe spills off it.
You wanted to hear all of that. Right? :-)----------
An update: Soon after I wrote this review, the food processor self-destructed. One of the metal blades ripped off of the shaft while I was using it. And then a piece of the latch broke off the lid in a way that sealed the lid and bowl permanently shut and permanently attached to the base. I was really happy, because it gave me a chance to buy a new food processor. I got a Braun CombiMax and am delighted with it. Here is a link to it: Braun CombiMax K-650 Food Processor, Braun K650 replaces the K600 The CombiMax has a much larger usable capacity than my old KitchenAid did, plus some nifty features that I haven't seen on any other food processor, such as a sealed bowl -- which means that liquid can't run out through the stem, so you can fill it *much* more full than other food processors.

RSVP International Endurance Stainless Steel Compost Pail 1-gal. Review

RSVP International Endurance Stainless Steel Compost Pail 1-gal.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this compost pail eight months ago, and am very happy I did. I have reduced the amount of weekly trash and in combination with a composter in my postage-stamp-size backyard, have set up a system where I'm making great compost for my potted plants, my little garden, my house plants. The compost pail, which sits on my kitchen counter, is virtually odorless (I haven't changed the filter yet--I just periodically rinse it).
The only reason I'm giving it four rather than five stars is that now, in the warmer months, it's attracting fruit flies. Every time I lift the lid a little swarm of them (5 or 6) flies out. They fly right back in, however, for it's Paradise Hotel for them. I don't think the charcoal filter does anything in terms of keeping them out. I may try a bit of mosquito netting and see if that helps.
As a noveau environmentalist, I'd advise against what the other reviewer suggests: don't use a plastic trash bag! That kind of defeats the purpose, for plastic is a big environmental problem. This pail is small and easy to clean. I just dump the scraps into my composter, then rinse the pail with water that I pour into the composter thereafter. If you're fussy, you can wash it with a bit of dish soap in the kitchen sink. Mine, thanks to coffee grounds (worms love 'em), fruit and veggie peelings, actually never gets at all funky.
Generally it's recommended that you not put any animal byproducts or grains in your compost--among other things, those are what usually makes things smelly and can also lead to disease or to strange things sprouting up in your soil.

I looked at what seemed to be a million blenders. I do a lot of vegan and raw foods but I didn't want to spend upwards of $400. I love this blender! It has handled everything I hoped it would, including frozen fruits for smoothies. It is very quiet for a blender. I like the die-cast base, the simple controls (who really needs 14 settings?), and the pulse setting. The only minor flaw is the difficulty in getting out the last 1/4 cup of whatever I've made. Overall, I very much recommend this blender.

Ball Mouth Plastic Storage Caps Review

Ball Mouth Plastic Storage Caps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you want to STORE food in ball/mason jars, rather than CANNING food, you NEED these.
Here's why:
The two part metal lids & caps that come with the Ball jars are for *CANNING*. These are NOT DESIGNED to be AIR TIGHT! The act of *canning* (pressure cooker, etc) creates a vacuum which seals the metal lid to the jar - the screw part is optional and is to simply hold the metal lid IN PLACE in case the canning fails. They are designed like that so that if the canning process is somehow faulty, and bacteria forms inside the jar, the lid will let the gases escape without making the jar EXPLODE. If you fill a jar up with WATER and put one of these metal lid/screw combos on it, and put it on its side, in a short time you will see it is NOT air or even water tight without a vacuum.
Now, you DO need the metal lids for canning, of course, and also if you're using one of those vacuum sealers with the jar attachment like the FoodSaver (which I recommend).
BUT YOU ALSO NEED THESE PLASTIC LIDS for storing anything else you want in the very handy classic ball/mason jars. The plastic lids ARE water and air tight - so they're perfect for medium-term storage of cereal, cookies, noodles, rice, etc.

Vita-Mix 1319 Professional Series, Onyx Review

Vita-Mix 1319 Professional Series, Onyx
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This blender beats the competition by a mile. There are several things that set it apart besides the power and design, which allows perfectly smooth smoothies, sauces and soups if you want them that way. I reviewed a previous model that is no longer available and notice there's a new model out that doesn't have the middle knob. While you'd still get the easy cleanup, power and reliability of the Vita-Mix, that knob (which is on this model) is something I really value because it allows you to change the speed by infinite degrees during processing.
I find this particularly important when processing hot liquids as you can get a wet 'explosion' if you try to start a blending process too fast, which causes the heat to suddenly expand the contents. I did this once with my small personal blender--bad idea. With this Vita-mix model, you can start at a very low speed and turn the speed up gradually to high. Starting at a slow speed also gets larger items broken up so a good flow can be established to the blending process sooner. I've found the speed control greatly enhances the ability to get the results I want, including dicing small quantities instead of pureeing them, if needed.
I've had my unit for years and have never had any problems. It's a great machine. It gets most any job done just the way you want it. It's no wonder professional chefs choose Vita-Mix over others. Highly recommended.

Columbian Home 0707-1 Granite Ware 21-1/2-Quart Steel/Porcelain Water-Bath Canner with Rack Review

Columbian Home 0707-1 Granite Ware 21-1/2-Quart Steel/Porcelain Water-Bath Canner with Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Granite Ware 21-Quart Covered Preserving Canner with Rack is a light-weight, lidded pot with a steel canning rack. As promised, the rack holds seven quart jars and with a little ingenuity, it can hold nine pint jars.
This canner is larger than most burners and may cause stovetop surface stains when used for extended periods. It cleans easily, holds the temperature and seems well constructed for such an inexpensive piece.
The graphic on the Amazon product page shows the canner with the rack lifted up and supported by the edge of pot. I was a tad nervous about lifting seven filled quart jars but the rack, though light-weight, was up to the task.
The only issue I have is with the height. To immerse seven one-quart jars with two inches of water above the lids means splashing or overflow will happen. I found no work-around for this problem but, for someone like me whose needs are limited (about 100 jars per season) this canner is a great addition.
If storage space was limited in this household, I would have an additional issue with the size of the canner. That's not a problem for me but it could be a consideration.
For those considering purchasing this as a stockpot as well as a canner, look elsewhere. The steel and enamel coating are too thin for anything beyond boiling water.
I am glad I made this purchase, it suits our purposes well.

Capture the harvest's bounty at its prime for enjoyment throughout the year by canning at home. This 21-1/2-quart water-bath canning pot makes it simple to preserve jams, vegetables, fruits, sauces, and more. The unit's tall design allows an ample amount of water to cover jars (not included) for even heating and thorough sterilizing, while its removable wire rack holds up to seven quart-size jars at a time, keeping them safely off the bottom of the pot and slightly separated from one another. The rack also comes equipped with two elongated handles for safely lowering and raising jars during the canning process.
Constructed with a strong steel core and a stylishly speckled black porcelain finish, the pot delivers long-lasting high-quality performance and even heat retention, while its nonstick, nonporous surface ensures fast and easy cleanup by hand or in the dishwasher--a nice feature after a long day spent in a hot kitchen. Other highlights include a handled lid that promotes faster heat-up times, as well as looped side handles for convenient transport (use oven mitts to carry when hot). Can be used on gas or electric stove tops. Not recommended for glass stove tops" , the USA-made water-bath canner with rack measures approximately 10 by 14 by 16 inches.

I saw this Vita-Mix and a Home and Garden show in Anaheim Califorina. I was very impressed and wanted to but it but I was low on cash so I waited till I had the money and bought the professional version. It comes with a wonderful DVD and the receipe book is just out of this world. This mixer does everything but cook a steak on the BBQ. The DVD explains all the things it can do like make soup and bread dough. I thought I was just going to make fresh fruit with wheat germ, honey and soy protein drinks. I was totally wrong. And I'm glad I am because it is worth every penny. Make sure you get the DVD and book with any model you choose it is worth it. I love mine and I'm sure you will too. OK, here's the gift for the cook who has everything. I have a white Kitchenaid mixer. I love it, but it looks like everyone's mixer. Not anymore. I saw Alton Brown's mixer on Good Eats one night, googled, and found FlameKA.com. Then I comparison shopped--basically everyone is charging the same price.
I got this one because it looked different from the flames. Also, my husband is a WWII buff, and he got a kick out of this set.
These decals are very heavy duty and thick. Easy to put on, and they're not coming off easily. The instructions provided are fine, but this is so easy you don't need much in the way of instructions.
FlameKA ships fast and isn't a big ripoff for shipping charges.
I know it seems like a lot of money to decorate a mixer, but I am going to have this mixer for a very long time, so break the cost down to a monthly cost, or something that will make you feel better. I spent a lot of money on the mixer, so why not a few more bucks making it special?

Norpro Stainless Steel Wide-Mouth Funnel Review

Norpro Stainless Steel Wide-Mouth Funnel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this funnel because I pour hot soup, spaghetti, stew, and other messy foods into a Thermos Stainless Food Jar W/ Folding Spoon 16oz twice a day. My conventional funnel is easily clogged, and neatly pouring hot soup directly from a pot into a thermos is a challenge. Pouring the soup from a pot into a large measuring cup and then into the thermos wasn't much better, as the broth splashed out of the thermos whenever a chunk of meat or vegetable fell in.
My husband purchased this wide-mouth funnel and the spilling and splashing was instantly eliminated. This is the first time that I haven't had to clean soup from the counter or the outside of a thermos food jar! Highly recommended for a tidy kitchen and to reduce the stress of packing hot, homemade meals to go.

Progressive International 11 Inch Jumbo Tower Grater Review

Progressive International 11 Inch Jumbo Tower Grater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's very tall for a grater, and the knob on the top fits right into you palm, and it makes grating very easy. I've had this for over a year now.., no sign of rust or aging. It's held up well.., no dents or dings and the black feet and top are holding up just fine.
I'd easily say this is the best grater I've ever had. It's very simple, yet very practicle. The way it's in a pyramid shape.., I haven't shredded a knuckle yet. I like the sizes of the holes.., I shred a lot of ginger and it works really well for that. (Hint, if you're going to shred ginger get a big hunk, rub off the peel with a spoon, (yes really, it works), and then freeze it before you shred it)
